European countries and Russia ban each other's flights,Increase in air transport costs

2022-02-28

On Sunday (February 27), local time, Germany joined the camp after the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Bulgaria and Slovenia successively banned Russian aircraft from entering their airspace.

German transport minister Volcker wiesin said that Germany has ordered a ban on Russian aircraft from entering the country's airspace. A spokesman for the German Ministry of transport said that restrictive measures were currently being prepared. The flight ban applies to all Russian Airlines, including Aeroflot.

KLM also suspended flights to and from Russia. KLM said the decision was made because of the sanctions announced late Friday, which prohibit the delivery of any aircraft parts to Russia, even if they are used by the airline itself.

Russia is also unwilling to show weakness in the "no fly" sanctions imposed by many European countries. As of Saturday local time, the Kremlin has banned aircraft from Britain, Bulgaria, Poland and the Czech Republic from entering its airspace.

A Russian Airlines flight from Moscow to Budapest made a significant detour over northern Europe and the Baltic Sea on Saturday morning, adding 70 minutes to the journey, according to flighttradar24 tracking data.

The restrictions imposed by Moscow have brought operational difficulties to British Airways. Normally, British Airways will use Russian airspace when flying over northern Russia and entering parts of Asia, including China and Japan, but now they have to choose to bypass.

Virgin Airlines suspended the cargo route between London and Shanghai, while British Airways confirmed that it would change its route to avoid Russian airspace, which would lead to longer flight time and higher fuel cost.

An industry executive said that mutual "no flights" would be "disastrous" for the aviation industry. British Airways CEO Sean Doyle said on Friday that the company currently does not have any flights to China or Japan, but it normally operates multiple flights a day.
